FAQ #4 What is the difference between Pilates Machine work and Mat work? BTS’ philosophy of Pilates work is that no student should begin Machine work without a solid base of knowledge and experience in the Mat work. Pilates machines use resistance, which increases the possibility of injury if exercises are not performed with proper technique. The same is true for most exercise systems/formats – when weight or resistance are added, risk of injury is increased. Proper technique must be achieved before adding difficulty, resistance, or weight in order to practice safely. Additionally, Mat work allows a greater degree of portability of the exercises. Students with an understanding of Mat work can practice safely at home, in the park, while traveling, or any place where there is sufficient space for movement. BTS does not encourage clients to become dependent upon our machines (or any others). Machines often do some of the work for the student. Mat work requires that the student exert a greater degree of control within the body and create his/her own resistance from within the body.
