What is Pilates?

While Pilates is a series of exercises, it is more importantly a philosophy about movement. Pilates exercises are designed to work with the body, not against it. Proper alignment of the bones allows for most efficient movement, creating less strain on the body. Contrary to the “no pain, no gain” mantra of many exercise advertisements, Pilates emphasizes ease of motion and economy of muscle use. Moving smarter, not harder, is what appeals to a new generation of educated movers.

Pilates exercises are designed to create balance and symmetry throughout the body, realign bones and improve posture, while developing long, lean muscles. Developed by Joseph H. Pilates more than 100 years ago, Pilates exercise was originally named Contrology (the science of body control). Rehabilitating himself from an illness, Joseph H. Pilates began by inventing his pulley and resistance-based machines. With the help of Eve Gentry and other students, the mat series was formed. (BTS uses Pilates exercises both in physical therapy and body conditioning. All of our group classes are in the Mat format, though Machine work is available in private or semi-private sessions.)

Though it is growing in popularity, many new students of Pilates still believe that the central goal is to strengthen the abdominal muscles. While it is certainly true that the abdominal muscles get a workout, so does the rest of the body! Pilates incorporates elements of coordination, concentration, breath work, stretching, strengthening, mobility, and stability to harmonize the work of the entire body.
Challenging enough for the strongest athlete yet gentle enough for seniors or those recovering from an injury, Pilates exercise emphasizes efficient movement, retraining the body (and mind) to move with less strain, and thus reducing the risk of injury in and out of class.

Pilates exercises are often recommended or prescribed by doctors for patients suffering from back pain, poor posture or alignment, or weakness in the “core” muscle groups. In Pilates, the muscles of the abdomen, back, and trunk (those closest to and in support of the spine) are often called the “core”, “center”, or the “powerhouse”. All of these terms describe the muscle groups that are in charge of maintaining posture, bending the chest toward the legs or the legs toward the chest, and supporting the internal organs. These muscle groups are integral to overall health! In an otherwise sedentary culture, maintaining flexibility and tone in these muscle groups is essential.

Pilates exercises are also highly effective at reducing or eliminating pain resulting from injury or repetitive movement patterns.
By reorganizing and rebalancing your body’s strengths and weaknesses, you will “reprogram” it to more effectively deal with the stresses of daily movement patterns. Whether you sit in a chair for much of your day, spend long hours commuting to work, or are a highly trained performer or athlete, Pilates will teach you the necessary skills for injury rehabilitation and prevention.
In Pilates class you will learn to become an intelligent mover. Once you learn Pilates exercises, the principles can be applied to most every other aspect of your physical being!

Pilates Class Offerings at BTS

All group Pilates classes at BTS are in the Mat series, are open to the general public, and do not require any previous experience in Pilates unless otherwise noted.

Beginning Pilates – This is a great place to start your Pilates workout. Beginning Pilates class is open to all students, but is geared toward the new student with little or no prior Pilates experience. The class will cover the basic Pilates principles and introduce the Mat series exercises. Even if you have taken Pilates before, it is recommended that you start your training at BTS in the Beginning Pilates class.

Intermediate/Advanced Pilates – Exploring the more difficult exercises of Pilates Mat work, this class is only for the experienced mover. A basic understanding of Pilates principles, safety precautions, and an ability to stabilize the pelvis are prerequisites. Instructor approval is required. This class is not offered at this time.

Mixed Pilates – This is a mixed level class. Students are expected to know how to work at their own level, and modifications and progressions will be provided. The class is open to all levels, but moves at a slightly faster pace and is slightly more advanced than the Beginning Pilates class.

Pilates Jam with Core 'Fuzion'! - This class features Pilates mat exercises done to the rhythm of music! Class moves at a faster pace and at a more advanced level. Participants must have experience with Pilates and instructor approval.

Men’s Pilates – Remember: Pilates was created by a man and was later adapted for women! This class is designed specifically for men of all levels of experience, addressing the obvious differences in how men approach movement. Men generally have less flexibility and a greater degree of upper body strength than women. This class recognizes those differences and adapts the exercises so that men feel comfortable in class and reap the benefits of Pilates exercise. Men are welcome in all of our classes, but this class was created by request for Men only.

Teen Pilates – A fun way to get fit, this class is for teens of all levels of experience. This class is not offered at this time.

Kids’ Pilates - A fun way to get fit, this class is for kids. This class is not offered at this time.

Prenatal Pilates – Studies have shown these exercise classes may relieve swollen extremities, leg cramps, varicose veins, insomnia, back pain, pelvic pressure, fatigue, and excessive weight gain. Additionally, they may improve posture, circulation (for mother and baby!), duration and experience of labor, energy levels, sense of well-being, and postpartum recovery. Moms-to-be in all stages of pregnancy are welcome. A signed physician release is required prior to class.

Postpartum Pilates – New Moms, are you dreaming of the day your pre-pregnancy clothes will fit again? Does your pre-pregnant belly seem like a distant memory? If so, this class is for you! You will learn the basics of Pilates while including your baby. Potential benefits of Postpartum Pilates include preventing and relieving low back pain, strengthening upper body, and improving postpartum recovery. Bond with your baby as you get back into shape! New moms and their babies up to 4 months are welcome. A signed physician release is required prior to class.

What is GYROTONIC®?

GYROTONIC® is sweeping the nation. Many New York Pilates studios have incorporated the GYROTONIC® system into their work.

GYROTONIC®, which was developed by Juliu Horvath, a former professional dancer, features rotational, spiraling, and circular motion, which enables the body to develop a fuller functioning of the neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular systems.

This rotational motion sets it apart from other disciplines. GYROTONIC® incorporates elements of yoga, dance, swimming, and martial arts. The exercises combine breath, movement, and resistance to create a constant, fluid workout. As we age our spinal fluid can become dry and static. The GYROTONIC® system focuses on stabilizing the core of the body while allowing the spine to perform wave-like motions. These motions keep the spine fluid and increase mobility.

BTS is the only facility in the Northeast Ohio region offering teacher training in GYROTONIC®. The BTS school teaches the machine and mat systems; pre-training and preparation for work with a master teacher. With advanced studies, an individual can attain certification to teach GYROTONIC® professionally.

GYROTONIC® Teacher Training Program

Pre-Training: In preparation for teacher training, it is necessary to first become familiar with the GYROTONIC® exercises. Learn proper technique, acquaint yourself with the equipment, and study the principles behind the system. Trainees are required to complete at least 24 hours of pre-training before participating in the next step toward certification, the teacher training course.

Level I Foundation (apprenticeship): Learn to teach the exercises safely and effectively. Specific teaching techniques and principles will be taught in the Level I Foundation Course, dividing the skills and elements of GYROTONIC® work into smaller units making mastery possible and quantifiable. Learn to conceive and prepare individual GYROTONIC® training programs for each client's needs specific to sport, activity, or clinical application.

GYROTONIC® Trainer Certification - Once you have completed pre-training and the Level I Foundation Course, you will receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship signed by Juliu Horvath. The apprenticeship period lasts a minimum of 3 months, maximum of 12 months, during which it is your responsibility to make arrangements for the following:

Note: The Apprenticeship Certificate will be nullified if the apprenticeship period requirements are not met within 12 months from completion of the Level I Foundation Course. You may not enroll in the Certification Exam until at least 3 months have passed since your completion of the Level I Foundation Course.

GYROKINESIS® Teacher Training Program

Similar in approach to the GYROTONIC® teacher training course, this course teaches the principles and techniques of teaching GYROKINESIS®. This series is excellent for work with larger groups in a class setting. Participants learn to design GYROKINESIS® progressions that are safe, level appropriate, and effective. There are several phases of training, commencing with pre-training, progressing through an apprenticeship phase, another re-training, and then a final test with Juliu Horvath. Trainees must complete 20 hours of pre-training as a pre-requisite for the Foundation level course with a master trainer.
